Types of thoughts
I never thought of there being categories of thoughts. Examining them in this way helps to remind me to filter out the many messages in my head from myself and others. I need to take action when needed and also ignore or redirect some thoughts. I took notes on part 1 and look forward to part 2 to get some ideas on how to do this.

I am always feeling so stressed out that it’s hard to imagine thoughts which are just simple or non-destructive. Everything I do, try or think seems to cause great stress to me. I’m struggling to prepare for a meeting this morning for the middle of the day, and as usual NOTHING seems to be going right for me! I’ve gotten distracted many times over, and my old laptop doesn’t want to cooperate when attempting to design a flyer. Everything is SO disheartening. Simple tasks are challenges to me anymore. I HATE IT! I USED to be so good at managing these simple stresses! Now? I can barely cope!

Don’t tell yourself to stop 🛑 xyz What you resist persists. All thoughts aren’t created equal! Take a step back from thoughts... objectively observe & try to understand what KIND of thoughts you’re having vs the thoughts themselves. Neutral. Distracting. Actionable. Inspired (understand something in a whole new way - write them down!) Negative/destructive. Just because you think something doesn’t mean it’s true.

Wow. Today was great, honestly. Nothing major went wrong. But I’m still sad- obviously, you know me! So I hopped on aura, in the hopes of finding something to alleviate the depression for a few minutes. Instead, I almost focused on it, I guess? Or at least considered it. But it felt pretty good. I felt that I allow my negative thoughts to consume me instead of taking control of them. I learned that I can’t tell myself to just get rid of my negative thoughts, but I can acknowledge them but not allow them to be my truth. I’ve been very stressed about someone else, allowing it to consume me all because I fear losing them. I have to learn to stop being afraid. What’s for me will be for me.

I learned that all the negative self talk is just random fears or thoughts that we have about certain situations. It’s not the word or the Bible . It’s not going to come true . We just fear it might and get worked up thinking about it. But it’s just a further waste of time! The next time you get a negative self talk - say okay and say this is not my truth- I won’t let it consume me .

I learned that you cannot control your own thoughts. Negative thoughts will always at some point or another arise, whether you like it or not. However, it is up to you to stray away from those thoughts that bring you down. Never let the negative side of your brain control who you are as a person. You are amazing, and you better start believing it.

I love the idea that you don’t have to resist or stop a negative idea from entering your mind, but instead you have to acknowledge it and let it go. Don’t focus on it. Where do I begin?
My wife and I have separated. Is it true that we should all just stop surrounding ourselves with negativity? My life with Laura was deeply unhappy, yet my children brought me more joy than I can describe. Yet now I’m labelled as the man who left, for another woman no less; abandoning his family. So yeah, feeling pretty low. On the other hand, work is going very well. And I’ve managed to keep another relationship steady. I’m filled with very dark and low thoughts indeed. I’ve have thought about, and attempted to take my life on numerous occasions. But I’m still here. Trying to get through each day without upsetting people or being made to feel low. The thing is, I’m to blame for it all. When I was away from home for long periods last year, I found calm and positivity. Now I feel further down in the dark than I’ve ever felt. And alone, despite family and work support.

I agree with much of what was said. I like the idea of categorizing thoughts. We may not be able to control having negative thoughts but we can 1) make our brains fertile ground for more positive thoughts & 2) encourage positive thoughts by reading & listening to positive material every day 3) say “cancel thought” to interrupt a negative thought stream. Do not allow a negative thought to stay in your brain! Bottom line, flooding our minds with so much positive leaves little room for negatives. Staying focused on positives tends to attract more positives. Make it a habit to look for the positive! Helen Keller said “when we face the sun, we see no shadows!” ❤️👍🏼🍀

A visualizer that helps me deal with my negative thoughts is the idea of leaves on a stream. Picture it is autumn, and the leaves are golden brown and fire red. Use as much mental description as possible to really make the scene come alive. Now, place each of hour negative thoughts on a leaf and watch as they float peacefully away.

I know I’m now what I think . My thoughts don’t define me. And it’s truth no one can just stop having negative thoughts. I’m trying to find a way to stop having bad or negative thoughts that just pop up in my head out of nowhere...thoughts i wouldn’t imagine or say to someone and think to myself why would this mean thought appear? . I like the idea of acknowledging negative thoughts, but dismissing them. That’s a big part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), changing the way we talk to ourselves. It’s so easy to fall into negative self talk (or thought) patterns, thinking/saying things to yourself that you wouldn’t allow someone to say to your best friend. We must be our own best friend!

I think acknowledging the thought will be most valuable for me. I have heard the “don’t think” before and previously by trying to imagine the thought differently I focus to much on it, making it consume me. I think by thanking my head for informing me of its opinion, it will almost dissociate it as someone else thought. It has already worked as writing this I had the thought “your stupid to sharing who wants to know what you think” I said thank you and decided this was on to write as it might help someone (that someone might be me) it certainly won’t hurt anybody and immediately I have found myself more at ease. I don’t know if the coaches read these but I’m case they do thank you for this it has helped me ❤️

I’ve been in intensive DBT and CBT therapy for years, and these are concepts that I know. I fall into the trap of thinking “why do I need to listen to this, I already know all of this.” And after listening to this, I’m realising that all of this stuff isn’t just something to be learned and then practiced alone. The act of listening to this is practice in and of itself.

Types of thoughts
I learned that not all thoughts are equal. Some are just facts or observations. Others are inspiring or helpful. Yet others are destructive. Destructive thoughts shouldn’t be taken as truth and should be diffused as quickly as possible.

I learned that writing down thoughts about projects or creative projects should be written down and acted upon. Today I thought about creating an on line family photo album. Things that I would want my kids to know about their ancestors.

I can really relate !
I had an event yesterday that left me rather deflated in spite of a lot of positive self-talk ahead of time. I consciously decided that I would not dwell on any of it until I had had some time to just let it sit inside me. I did that because I didn’t want to have an overblown reaction to it but also because I didn’t want it to affect my sleep! I slept pretty well and now today I will dissect all the pieces and work to improve the aspects that didn’t go as well as I would have liked. At least it was a learning experience! This talk helped me feel more calm and objective about it all. I will listen to Part 2 now and check back!

This reminds me a lot of what I have learned in DBT. Whenever I get those negative distracting thoughts - I try to practice mindfulness, what I’m doing in the present moment. Not putting a label on the terrible feelings or mean things I’m saying about myself, just sitting with it, observing and then it floats away. I’m looking forward to the second half to learn more ways to diffuse these thoughts!
