Positive Self-discipline
I am learning to distinguish positive self-discipline as practice. Discipline as punishment is: self-shame when you failed, failure is evidence that you are bad, broken or unworthy and the feeling that discipline restricts freedom. Discipline as practice is: self-compassion when you fail, failure as information for growth and the feeling that discipline expands freedom. I do remember thoughts that set my mind into discipline as punishment. We receive it from out parents first and it takes time and practice to build our own positive self-discipline as adults. I am thankful for the change I’m making!
Three Secrets
We are the combination of every conscious and unconscious choice. Every thought, every feeling and every action has lead us to where we find ourselves in this moment. We need self discipline not just to survive, but to thrive in our life. Because we teach self discipline to our children, we must become this in all areas of our life. In this life coaching wisdom session, Dorothy tells us the three secrets to this life skill and their success strategies to guide us along our path. The first secret to self discipline is having a sincere and heartfelt desire to become more or a wanting of more. The greater the desire, the easier it is to practice self discipline. Visualizing ourselves in the attainment of this desire is an excellent success strategy. Utilizing all of our senses, we focus intensely on what our desire feels like, looks like, is like, in the present. The second secret is all about planning our strategy. Planning, we think of what our daily tasks will be, how much time we will need to carve out on a daily basis and the self talks we will have. Follow through, the third and final secret, is perhaps the most challenging. To help us get us over the finish line, we must listen to our inner wisdom with no questions asked and use this voice as a voice of reason and power. We must become the parent and the mentor, providing both the messaging and game plan. Being in constant communication with ourselves, we hold ourselves accountable to what is needed. Follow through becomes much easier to accomplish when we remind ourselves periodically of the positive benefits of doing the work and of the desired outcome we want to achieve. Self discipline requires us to have a focused and positive mindset. At all times, what we want must be more important than us not having it. Thus, our resolve, or intention must always be our North Star. Namaste 🙏🏻❤️☮️
