This is an introduction to the CBT concept of Negative Automatic Thoughts (NATs). Starting to understand and identify NATs is key to self awareness, and the starting point for making meaningful changes in our lives. As these NATs are occurring regularly and are so familiar to us, we often don't notice them for what they are.

Having a lot of negative thoughts
I do tend to have quite a bit of negative thoughts throughout the day. Most happen when the process of something is going slow or I’m not seeing any results automatically

Very helpful.
I have a lot of NATs throughout my day, and sometimes they can cause a pretty extreme anxiety reaction. I need to get better at stopping them from escalating to the point where I upset myself.

Friday nights
I feel calmer. My energy is more open to my husband and I don’t start from a place of fear. His energy has also been slightly calmer than the usual end of week binge drink and scream at strangers on the internet (or pick fights with me).

Negative automatic thoughts
This cognitive behavioral therapy session informed me that negative thoughts are automatically generated and inevitable. I find this information helpful , because I have often tried to avoid negative thoughts. I often become very self critical when negative automatic thoughts arise. This in turn makes them worse. It is encouraging to know good negative thoughts or part of human thinking in general, since the human brain was designed to detect threats. Consequently, my negative thoughts are not my fault. They are therefore not grounds for self criticism.. Additionally, the fact the negative automatic thoughts can be disputed makes me feel that I will increase my positive thoughts in the future. Thank you to those who work for this app for teaching me this lesson. I am also grateful for the community on this app for taking the time to read this post. I hope you are all OK , happy,And well.

If we all accepted that everyone has NATS life would be different
If ppl see me negatively it’s not on me, it’s on their own unchallenged negative thoughts

Memories
Many thoughts I automatically get are all from my past. The terrible things, the things I would do something about now, but didn’t know what to do then. It slays me.

NATS are normal
I learned that negative automatic thoughts are something we all have; they are hardwired into our brain. I look forward to learning how to challenge and work with these thoughts when they take place.

I learned that it’s normal to be plagued with negative thoughts. It’s my brains way of analyzing threats. I cannot control them or make them stop, but I can learn to identify them and dispute them.

It’s sort of liberating to learn that it’s natural and our brains are wired to have negative thoughts. Looking forward to learning how to deal with them in a healthy way.

Negative thoughts ANTS are hardwired!
We cannot prevent ANTS because they are hardwired and are parts of our brain and nervous systems defense mechanisms.

I am not alone in this…
I learned that these thoughts are not only natural but, automatic and I cannot stop them. I CAN train my mind to notice them more quickly and shift my thoughts to a more + response to the situation.

Negative thoughts are a coping mechanism
They arise when we feel threatened. The nervous system cannot differentiate between actual and potential threats so we need to be the filter by thinking objectively.

Negative Automatic Thoughts occur regularly to everyone due to a negativity bias, but noticing them is the first step to challenging them.

It is normal to have negative thoughts bc our brains are hardwired that way. We cannot make the thoughts go away but we can reword to not spiral out of control

Take away
This is something that I fall victim to a lot especially lately. I need to bring more awareness to that and do something different to actually regulate and grow

Negative thoughts are hardwired
I learned that “there is nothing wrong with me”. Sometimes I blame myself. Like why do you keep having negative thoughts!!?? Are you depressed?!? Why can’t you think of anything positive?!?? Today I learned that our bodies are hardwired for the negative thoughts. Our bodies are supposed to identify “threats”. So if I’m thinking negative thoughts (threats) my body is going to identify it, therefore I will notice the negative thought! But because I am so used to the negative thoughts… they constantly are on repeat… I have to retrain my thoughts ❤️

I learned that negative thoughts are hardwired and even mean my nervous system is working - but that we can also learn to recognize and change negativity

Negative thoughts are hard wired
I learned that I am normal. I usually think I’m a crazy person when I react negatively and I try to talk myself back to a more positive attitude as quickly as possible.

Brittany Bodwell shared the story about you having a flat tire, your best friend driving right past you - looking you straight in the eyes - you becoming very upset for that day plus 1 or 2 more. Then
Brittany Bodwell, share the story about you having a flat tire and needing help. Your best friend drives by and looked you straight in the eye and keeps on going. You were upset for that day +2 more not understanding why she didn’t stop and help you. On the last day you found out that your friend had her young child in the backseat who was actually dying and she was rushing to get to the hospital. Fortunately she got to the hospital in the nick of time and they were able to save her young child she looked at you wanting to stop but not being able to. She wanted to help her friend but she had no time she had to get to the hospital with her dying child. Now after you have felt this way for so many days now you feel shame anger at your self remorse embarrassment all because you didn’t have all the facts. How could you have felt this way when her child was dying? How could you have even expected her to stop when her child was dying, but you didn’t know her child was dying. It’s all of matter of where your perspective is and the amount of information you know on the complete situation. Never judge another person’s actions without knowing the information they have on what’s going on in their lives!

Intrusive thoughts
I’ve always had them I have tried many things I didn’t realise it’s not something I can stop. I can’t just stop them. Everyone has them some are worse than others. Some people like myself need to learn skills to better operate.

Negative automatic thoughts. I want to learn more. I do have them of course. They start as a trigger, thoughts, feelings, overall mood, into the rest of our day. Or longer. If we continue, our mind automatically recognizes these triggers and thoughts. And so on and so forth. I want to learn the process of ridding myself of these. Thank you. 😀

Interesting track
I know I have experienced these thoughts, but I didn’t realize we were hardwired to receive them. It also explains why my husband sometimes picks up something I say as negative when I thought I was being very neutral.

Freedom from self blame
It is freeing to learn that these reactions are innate and have a survival basis evolutionarily. It helps me to stop blaming myself for reacting, particularly in traffic, which is a major trigger. For years, I have strive to check my thoughts, usually apologize to the other driver, and try to go to compassion that perhaps they have something painful going on in their lives, or simply didn’t see me. I’ve often wondered why it’s still occurs! Thank you.

I learned that negative thoughts, particularly around perceived threats, are natural. I need to learn to identify them before speaking them, and assess their accuracy before acting upon them.

Sunday morning march snow day
I found this phrase negative automatic thoughts (NAT) to be really helpful. It allows me to disassociate myself from my neurological behavior. I should ask Tara Raam if they are really hardwired. it seems odd to say that it is hardwired into our human nature to be negative.

At this point after working at it, I have a more balanced viewpoint when I receive any thoughts, or negative automatic thoughts. My thoughts used to take over sometimes. I'm glad that they aren't as prevalent in my life anymore.
