Overgeneralizing is an unhealthy thinking style that can contribute to depression, anxiety, or even increased anger. When you overgeneralize you make assumptions and draw conclusions that are very broad. This can cause you to begin to respond as though there is a pattern of negative events instead of staying focused on the current situation. By beginning to pay more attention to the language you use, you can begin to shift this unhealthy thinking style.

I’m Guilty Of This
I know I’m a big “generalizer” in my everyday thinking. I’m going to try and be more mindful of thisof this when it happens. I would like some help on better words to use to replace the generalized ones.

Me to a T
Especially when things aren’t going the way I’d like them to be. This helped me realize how overgeneralizing has set me up for other negative thought patterns to where wherever I look around, all I see is something else wrong and then I miss the reality of many things being right.

Clarity in framing
Words matter. I get that. Words I use to describe my experience are best to be specific to the moment otherwise I’m living the same stuck experience over and over. The proverbial broken record - I’m the one responsible

I do use the word always a lot at work. We are always late in putting in proposals
I learnt that overgeneralising prevents me from seeking solutions to problems that sometimes occur because I overgeneralise and think they are always occur and are inevitable.
