I became very focused on my breathing and was able to lose myself in the breath. When my mind wandered I noted and then again concentrated on the in and out breaths. Our breath is truly like a dear friend that is always there for us. I find myself taking long deep breaths when stressed and it truly is calming and centering.

My first anxiety attack, I was in the middle of completing my calculus homework during the last two minutes of break. I remember feeling helpless with a calculator in my hand but no formula or possible derivations in my head. I fell to the floor, shallow breaths leaving my mouth as my hands turned numb and vision grainy and dark. I’ve learned since then (especially now) to value breath. You never know when you’ll lose it.

The space that you create when you focus on your breathing displaces the mambo-jumbo, as it were, of thoughts that were inhabiting that space. Today, what I realized was a new thought that came about by noticing the absence of others. Not only that, but I saw the space that I literally fill with my lungs as I breathe in as being a vulnerable space as I breathe out. The space is still there, but it isn’t filled by me for that moment. However, it is still filled with my consciousness. How’s that for some deep space?

I'm not currently capable of breathing normally when I'm paying attention to my breath. This isn't a problem for me, but it's definitely something I notice. I actually prefer intentional breathing, possibly because I value intentionality (that's a nice way of saying I'm a bit of a control freak), but also because I like the way it feels and the way it makes me feel. Put another way, I don't often enjoy breathing, but when I focus it comes pretty naturally to me.

We can go for a few to several days without food or water. How many days can we go without breathing? Hours? Minutes? And only a few of them at the most, if we want to stay on that that “hit parade” we call life. We all need to “re-appreciate” breathing and the gift of life it gives us.

Today I woke up at Dustin’s and we chilled until he had to go to class at 6 and he took me home. When I got home mom was there and she spent a good half hour yelling at me because I can’t do anything right. Then I spent the rest of the night in my room crying cleaning and smoking. I thoroughly enjoyed this as I was presented with an opportunity to just “be” and enjoy my breathing. I felt completely relaxed and at ease. I could have easily fallen asleep through this as that’s how relaxed I became. I will carry this feeling with me throughout the day.

Listen and recognize emotions
Treat every emotion as a signal to listen to yourself rather than something to avoid. If we are wading in a pool of our emotion, every tinge if anger or panic would cause the water to ripple and move. Ignoring this would be easy, but if you look for and allow yourself to feel the ripple, you can take action to remedy the situation causing it. If you don’t pay attention, that ripple in the water can grow into a wave that might make you stumble. If you listen for and acknowledge these emotions, then they are less likely to overwhelm you or create a tsunami of feeling. With awareness, these feelings can wash past you, allowing you to stand tall and adaptable.

Overcoming Negative Interactions
A person in my life causes me a great deal of stress. Having the ability to let all that go and meditate is a difficult concept to think about. In practice, because the aim is to let go of thoughts, it is actually easier than it seems.. although it will take quite a bit of practice for me to stop myself in the moments I’m most stressed and make that choice to do something positive for myself instead.
