We often focus on negative thoughts about the past or future and tend to remember difficult experiences more than positive ones. This can lead to anxiety and low mood. A regular practice of appreciation and gratitude gently trains us to notice and remember the good in our lives, creating a more balanced and positive mindset. The key is not only to recall something or someone you are grateful for, but to fully experience the feeling and notice the sensations in your body, as if it were happening now. Practiced this way, appreciation can increase happiness, improve wellbeing, relationships, and sleep, and reduce negative thinking. I encourage you to practice it every evening, or at least once or twice a week.
