The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It is written as a series of entries in a secret diary that describes the narrator’s depression following the birth of her child. The narrator’s husband, a respected physician, diagnoses her behavior as “hysteria” and prescribes rest in an old country estate. During their 3 month stay, she spends her days in bed and becomes obsessed with the peculiar yellow wallpaper and the woman who seems to be trapped behind it.
