A daily gratitude practice can be immensely beneficial to your well-being but maybe—if you’re like me—it never really clicked when you tried it. Even though you were journaling about your gratitude, you didn’t feel a strong enough impact in your life to continue the practice for the long term. Recently, I accidentally discovered a key element of gratitude that I wasn’t doing. This small change made a huge impact on my life, and I want to share that with you in this session.

I teared up a little bit after this. I never realized how often I don’t take the time to appreciate or show gratitude towards the people in my life or even for the littlest things. I never stopped to think that do they know how grateful I am that they’re there for me or being grateful for my own accomplishments and how far I’ve come up until this point. I have been challenging myself to write at least three different gratitude statements each morning for about two weeks now. From the beginning, I chose to share them with my partner. Initially, I needed the accountability, for him to hold me accountable to myself. Now, in just two weeks, I am writing more than three statements each morning. I share them with him because they are intimate and powerful reflections of my growing and changing self. Easing my struggle with gratitude
I’m seen as Type A, intense, etc. and trying out meditation, listening to life coaching sessions, and making some other changes to try to find some peace and happiness at a time when there is a lot going on to bring me down. I hear a lot about gratitude. Quite frankly, it often sounds trite and even phony to me. I’m in a bad or sad mood, and I’m supposed to think about what I’m grateful for. Uh, no. It often makes me feel annoyed. Somehow, this session didn’t have that affect. It resonated with me in a way that feels possible. Not sure I can commit to every day, but I want to start with once a week or so and build on it. Thank you for helping me to find gratitude! It is the thing I am grateful for today.

Today I am grateful for the light that peaks through the shut blinds in my bedroom. I am grateful for them gradually filling my room with light as I get up in the mornings to open them. It’s the first thing I do most mornings and makes me feel like I’ve completed a task for the day. Simply getting up to open those blinds and letting in the rays of light creates a reason for me to get up and start my day. And that’s why I’m grateful for them, because some days are harder than others and all I want to do is go back into a deep slumber but seeing those shut blinds knowing the light is behind them gives me reason to get up.

I would add that Aura offers a gratitude journaling tool, available to all users right on the home page of the app. I used it daily when I began using Aura one year ago, but got out of the habit of journaling my gratitude there. I will take Marisa up on her idea of offering my handwritten gratitude daily...I know who will be seeing and sharing this each day, and I truly hope that my wife, Jill, understands WHY I'm leaving this handwritten message of gratitude for her each day. She means the world to me, and I couldn't even cope each day without her by my side.

I’ve been writing in the gratitude journal on the app but I think sharing the practice with my husband will deepen my gratitude practice AND improve our marriage. We get up at different times so this is my plan: I’ll put our journal somewhere DH will see it before he leaves. He’ll write his entry and put it in our bedroom on my pill case. I’ll see it as soon as I wake up, write my entry, and put it back where he’ll see it the next morning. It seems a little complicated but it’s the best solution I can come up with. Has anybody tried something like that? Did it work for you?

I have been documenting something I am grateful for every day this year since I started this mindfulness journey, and it has been a truly wonderful experience. As the year is coming to a close, I have begun reflecting on how I can continue to promote mindfulness in the new year. This meditation gave me the ideas of actually physically writing down my gratitude each day, and where possible, sharing my gratitude with another person. Sharing what we are appreciative of with the people in our lives is such a fantastic idea because it means that we are actively living out the goals of mindfulness. It also allows us to give another person hope and, by modelling gratitude, we can encourage those we love to develop a resilient and healthy mindset too.

I have made it a tradition to spend the last few days of the year in reflection. There were times in the past that I wrote down the distressing events of the year, wrapped them in my very best gift wrapping paper and burned them on the last day of the year, clearing the way for new events and opportunities in the new year. However, this morning I awoke pondering what my new year would be like if I focused only on what I was grateful for. If I end my year in gratitude, do I open the door for even more positive in the coming year? I decided that I would experiment with this notion, so today I choose to focus on gratitude. Among the many things that I am grateful for is the Aura community, for listening without judgement, supporting and encouraging me along my journey to continue to grow and evolve. I am grateful for the developers of this app. Aura and the Aura community have made a wonderful difference in my life. It has been proven that having an attitude of gratitude gives us a healthy and positive mindset. In this life coaching session, Marisa gives us another way to practice gratitude if we aren’t already on a daily basis. She suggests writing, “Today I am grateful for...” on a piece of paper and placing it somewhere where others in your household can read it. If you live alone, try typing what you are grateful for on the community board here on Aura or even on your Facebook page. Because I want to set a positive tone for my day ahead, I think of a few things to be grateful for before I even get out of bed in the morning. Since beginning to do this about three months ago, I have noticed a great change in my life. Yes, there have days where it has been harder than others to be in a grateful mood. On those days, I have been grateful for having another day to find peace in my life or for even having my heart beating to keep me alive. There is always something to be grateful for! Having an attitude of gratitude has a domino effect in our lives. Once we think of things to be grateful for, the more things we will find to be grateful for! It’s a winning attitude to have! Because I have no one to share my hand written gratitude note to someone in my house every day, I have the chance to type after handwriting in a gratitude journal I am able to record & share here. Any comments from anyone: Marissa, fellow members of aura and all those looking to be their best selves gratefully welcomed. This is difficult for me. I have had my world turned upside, I am depressed, gaining weight, want to sleep all day and not be my responsible self. First mistake, inviting a darling man who I’ve known For 30 years. He had become homeless. Bless the food stamps, but two years... no income, no SSDI. He is broken and frightened and I know it is not up to me to fix him. He is wrapped in victim hood as if he were walking a runway in France. Suffering from clinical depression all my life it is not always easy for me to stay my normal positive self especially with the pandemic. Meditation w/brainwaves is a great start prior to Aura. Today I am grateful to have working early enough to walk my dogs before the heat. I am preparing for my double shift. I understand I have a new student today and for that I am also grateful. Considering I am usually given the more difficult upper management students, and he has been rejected by three other female tutors for being a male chauvinist pig, but I am excited to make his acquaintance and learn his career and expectations and thoughts. I hope I am doing this right. Any positive responses, suggestions orConstructive criticism is welcome.
