Before the mid-20th century, Tibet operated under a feudal system, with a strict hierarchy and a majority serf population. Monasteries and aristocratic families held vast landholdings and exercised control over the serfs. The Chinese Communist government's push for reform, including land redistribution and the abolition of serfdom, threatened the traditional power structures and sparked resistance from the Tibetan elite, including Taktra Rinpoche.
