For some people, especially those with illnesses in the respiratory system, anxiety, or a traumatic experience, focusing on the breath or sensations in the chest might not be the best way to relax or learn to meditate. For these individuals, sound may work better as a primary object of mindfulness. For everyone else, this is a chance to train your mindfulness muscle in a slightly different way. Quiet is a luxury, the world is full of sounds. If we cannot block them out, we might as well be aware of them. Sound is only in this moment, it cannot be in the past or the future, and in this way, it’s a beautiful object for mindfulness.
