Timothy Morton, once said: “When you’re meditating, you’re just allowing your mind to be what it is already, which is an object.” I think this is a beautiful idea, the mind as an object. It puts a little less pressure on us to do something or be something with and within our minds. Sometimes, however, it is not possible to drop into this mind-as-an-object space. When we're anxious, overwhelmed, stressed out when we've read the news against our better judgments. So what then? Then we can retreat into a different mind space. We can let this object that is our mind be a refuge, a place where angst and stress can co-exist with a feeling of peacefulness, a feeling of safety. In short, we can create a safe space for ourselves.
