This story is about the Baal Shem Tov, an 18th century magician, mystic and healer, who founded the movement of spiritual renewal that swept through easter Europe in the 1700s. The story is of a fateful meeting between Jacob Joseph, a well known religious master of the time, and the Ball Shem. Jacob had apparently heard of the Baal Shem before but had refused to join his ecstatic movement. The following is a story of their meeting, a story of surrender, as told by Marc Gafni.

Fear & contril
When I am fearful I resort to controlling my environment. I control to avoid abandonment, disharmony, and emotional pain. I control because I believe that if I am perfect the world will treat me the way I want to be treated. When I am fearful it seems impossible to let go of the reins.

Give up control
This was a good story for me. Giving up control used to never even occur to me! That was the first 30+ years. The last 40 years, Iโ€™ve thought about it many times and have even been able to just let things be the way they are a number of times. Practice, practice, practice!

Relax
Control has its place but life is chaotic, you can bend and still be strong. Donโ€™t sweat the small stuff and remember strength comes in many forms.

I was reminded, again, that I am not in control
I am only in control of this moment, right now, and try as I might I cannot control what happens in the future. I can only control what I do, what I feel, what I think, how I choose to act right now. Only in this moment. I am also not in control of how I will react to some future thing in my life.... not until I get to that moment. How hard that is.

Not understanding
I do not feel like I understood this story, nor any deeper meaning within it, if one exists. Can anyone clue me in?

You canโ€™t force it...
Trying to force a situation doesnโ€™t always work, sometimes you just have to step back and surrender to the situation for awhile until your mind clears and allows the answer to come to you!

I donโ€™t wanna!
If the moral of this story is to basically give up any control over the situations in your life, I choose to keep fighting! Maybe thatโ€™s counter-productive, but Iโ€™m a fighter! A fixer of problems, usually for other people, but with enough effort, I SHOULD eventually get things fixed up for myself too!
