Calm and Centered
As we are confronted with challenges through life, a.k.a., ‘opportunities for growth’ we often forget that our body is breathing in the background of every second of every minute of every hour of every day. This is especially true for those of us who have anxiety. Because it can be difficult for those of us that have anxiety to focus on their breath, Nitima us a new breathing technique where we don’t just focus on our breath, we Feel our breath. Moreover, by counting our inhale and exhale, we give our mind a ‘job’ to do. Giving our mind a ‘job’, it is focused rather than scattered, where thoughts of the future can creep in. Soon, we find ourself in the wonderful place of present moment awareness, where we can be calm with life. Bringing my awareness to what I could see, hear, taste, smell and touch in my surroundings, I found my mind out of any future thoughts and into the here and now. Feeling my mind more relaxed, I dropped my awareness into my body where I noticed my belly rising and falling with each breath. As different sensations rose and fell each moment, I found myself breathing into them instead of labeling them. Allowing them to just be instead of labeling them, I found myself practicing mindfulness, where I accepted the here and now, without judgement. Ahhh...freedom to just be! Following Nitima’s guidance, I began to breathe in through my nose for a count of 5, pause for a moment, exhale through my mouth to a count of 7 and pause for a moment. After doing roughly five rounds of shaping my breath in this manner, I sensed my body fully relaxed. With my body relaxed, my mind also relaxed. I found myself in the wonderful place of present moment awareness where I was calm and centered. Calm and centered, I watched life unfold within and around me. Ahhh...freedom to just be! Thank you for teaching me this new breath technique, Nitima! I will use it often when I catch anxious thoughts creeping into my mind. I will also share this awesome breath technique with others so that they may break away from anxiety and begin to live their life more in the wonderful place of present moment awareness, where they can watch life unfold, calm and centered. And calmed me. I find the teacher’s voice is key to helping me focus and Nitima is so assuring and strong, and that comes through her gentle voice.
